After I read this diary, I watched the film again and it was exciting to see how it "all came together" after much fussing and fretting.Dame Emma Thompson isn't just one of her generation's finest actors she's also an award-winning screenwriter who's contributed to more movie screenplays than you might realize, including upcoming holiday rom-com Last Christmas. I was surprised by how insecure and self-criticial Thompson was in this diary, especially when you consider that she had just experienced such great success with Howards End and The Remains of the Day. Apparently, it really IS a lot of boredom and standing around (waiting for the weather to change, in this one) - punctuated by moments of high stress. Still, it is an engaging read - and I enjoyed learning more about how movies made. Except for a few brief mentions, as when she describes him as "ruffling everyone's feathers," she completely avoids mentioning Greg Wiseman - or the fact that she fell in love with him during the making of this film. This "diary" is highly selective - and although Emma Thompson is surprisingly open about sharing her physical ailments (wind, cystitis, yeast infection) with the reader, she is more reticent about the bigger emotional dramas going on.
